Build a plan around your goals and risk tolerance.

Review savings goals, investment horizons and the difference between pension, bank and insurance solutions. Clarify the scope of advice before selecting any investment.

Start with three questions

01When will you need the money?

02What loss could you afford and tolerate?

03Do you have an emergency reserve first?

UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU COMPARE

The details that change your decision.

Start with the essentials, explore the trade-offs, then compare written terms for your situation.

Give each goal its own time horizon

Separate an accessible emergency reserve, spending planned in the next few years and long-term retirement saving. Money needed soon has less capacity to absorb market losses. Define the amount, target date, currency and how flexible the goal is before choosing a product.

Understand what you own

Read the asset allocation, concentration, liquidity and currency exposure. A fund name or a historical chart is not a risk description. Ask how the portfolio could behave in a market fall, whether access can be delayed, and whether any guarantee applies to your exact holding and circumstances.

Compare net value after every cost

Add platform, custody, fund, transaction, currency and advice costs, including entry or exit charges. Compare equivalent strategies rather than a cash account against a high-equity portfolio. Keep tax assumptions distinct from investment returns and revisit the plan after changes to income, residence or family needs.

AT A GLANCE

Keep these distinctions clear.

Questions specific to this service

Does past performance tell me what I will earn?

No. Use it to understand history, then assess risks, costs and several future scenarios.

WHAT MATTERS

A useful comparison looks deeper.

Start with liquidity needs and debts before investing long-term savings.

Compare total costs, diversification, investment risk and withdrawal constraints. Past returns do not predict future returns.

Discuss whether the proposed service is within the adviser’s authorised scope; regulated securities advice may require a specialist.
