Check the full tax picture before choosing 3a.

A first eligibility screen for people living abroad and working in Switzerland, followed by a comparison of the complete tax position.

Start with three questions

01In which canton are you taxed?

02What is your household’s worldwide gross income?

03How much of that income is taxable in Switzerland?

UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU COMPARE

The details that change your decision.

Start with the essentials, explore the trade-offs, then compare written terms for your situation.

Identify the competent tax system first

Living in France and working in Switzerland is not enough to determine the tax result. Establish the employment canton, residence, household position and tax already withheld. Geneva and other cantons can involve different procedures. International-organisation income and telework require individual classification rather than assumptions based only on the employer’s address.

Eligibility is not a tax-saving calculation

The Geneva 90% screen addresses one quasi-resident route. It does not compare ordinary tax with withholding. Before requesting TOU, assemble worldwide income, spouse income, relevant assets and deductions, then calculate the complete household position. A deductible 3a payment can change one line without making the overall assessment favourable.

Coordinate health and retirement across borders

List your Swiss pension certificates, French pension rights and current health arrangement. Review any applicable health-insurance choice or exemption with the competent authority before switching. If you stop Swiss work, reassess contributions, accident protection and vested-benefits arrangements together so that an employment change does not leave a coverage gap.

Questions specific to this service

Does meeting 90% guarantee a saving?

No. Eligibility and the final tax outcome are separate checks; use the full household calculation.

WHAT MATTERS

A useful comparison looks deeper.

For Geneva’s main quasi-resident route, at least 90% of worldwide gross income must be taxable in Switzerland, including both spouses for a married couple.

Meeting the ratio does not establish whether a subsequent ordinary assessment saves tax. Other eligibility routes may exist.

Review income, assets and deductions as a whole with the competent canton. The Swiss-resident calculator is not a cross-border tax comparison.
