Prepare for the cost of a digital incident.

Review incident response, data exposure, operational downtime and liability with your existing security controls.

Start with three questions

01What sensitive data do you handle?

02Do you use MFA and tested backups?

03What would one day offline cost?

UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU COMPARE

The details that change your decision.

Start with the essentials, explore the trade-offs, then compare written terms for your situation.

Security first, insurance for residual risk

Use multi-factor authentication, maintained systems, restricted access and independent backups. Test restoration and train staff to recognise payment and credential fraud. Insurance does not restore an untested backup or correct weak access controls; the application may make these safeguards conditions of cover.

Response, recovery and liability

Compare incident-response specialists, forensic work, restoration, notification support and covered interruption. Separate your own recovery costs from liability to clients or other parties. Check ransomware, payment fraud, outsourced systems, territorial scope and sublimits explicitly.

Know whom to call before an incident

Keep the insurer’s emergency contact outside your main IT system. Clarify prior-approval requirements for experts and spending, evidence preservation and reporting. Align the policy waiting period with your recovery plan and simulate a day without email, billing or production systems.

Questions specific to this service

Are cloud files the same as a backup?

Not necessarily. Retention and synchronisation may not protect against deletion or ransomware. Use independent backups and test restoration.

WHAT MATTERS

A useful comparison looks deeper.

Insurance complements security controls and does not replace them.

Check incident services, ransomware terms, exclusions and supplier outages.

Underwriting depends on controls, sector and the information provided.
