Variable income: make 3a sustainable before maximising it
A contribution plan should survive a weak quarter, not only a good year.

The decision
For freelancers, commission earners and people changing careers, a fixed maximum contribution may be a poor starting point. Begin with a cash-flow forecast that includes taxes, household costs and professional expenses. Retirement saving should be a durable habit, not a reason to finance ordinary bills with expensive borrowing.
What changes the answer
With a pension fund, the small ordinary limit applies. Without one, eligible contributions follow the income-based percentage and statutory ceiling. The relevant status must be established rather than assumed from being called self-employed. Income definitions and mixed employment can require provider or tax-authority clarification.
A realistic example
A fictional sole trader has CHF 80,000 of eligible net earned income and no pension fund. The ordinary income-based 20% calculation gives CHF 16,000, below the maximum. That is a limit, not an instruction to contribute CHF 16,000. A cash reserve and uncertain final accounts may justify a smaller amount pending confirmation.
The hidden trade-off
A monthly insurance commitment can provide discipline and protection, but its adjustment rules become particularly important when income fluctuates. A flexible bank arrangement can adapt contributions but does not automatically supply protection. Compare both against low-income and temporary-stop scenarios rather than judging only projected retirement capital.
Build a quarterly contribution method
Forecast three income paths: expected, weak and severely delayed. Deduct taxes and essential expenses before assigning retirement money. A professional might commit CHF 200 monthly as a sustainable base and review additional contributions after confirmed quarterly receipts, if the product permits. The annual ceiling still applies across providers, so keep a cumulative ledger. Do not treat invoices issued as cash received, and avoid funding the December contribution from money reserved for a tax bill. This method makes saving responsive to realised cash flow rather than dependent on optimistic annual revenue assumptions.
Your practical checks
Check current pension-fund affiliation, earned-income evidence and every existing 3a payment. Reserve cash for taxes and several months of essential spending. Ask about missed-payment consequences, contribution reductions and year-end processing dates. Avoid a last-minute transfer based on an unverified estimate of the legal limit.
Keep status and cash-flow checks separate
Someone with salaried work and freelance income needs more than a rough self-employed label to establish the contribution limit. Pension-fund affiliation during the relevant year and the accepted income base must be checked with the competent parties. Meanwhile, affordability remains a separate household question even after the legal amount is confirmed. A permitted CHF 16,000 contribution could still leave the business unable to pay suppliers. Document legal eligibility, the amount chosen and the reserve left afterwards as distinct decisions. Repeat the review after a change in employment or incorporation rather than carrying forward last year’s limit automatically.
The next step
A smaller contribution maintained consistently can be better than an ambitious arrangement interrupted early. Review once final income is known and again before year end. Separate the legal maximum, the tax-efficient amount and the amount the household can comfortably afford; these are three different figures.
