Bank or insurance 3a: compare the commitment, not the label
Separate investment choices, risk protection, fees and payment obligations.

The decision
A bank foundation and an insurance policy can both provide recognised pillar 3a arrangements. That shared tax framework does not make their economic design identical. The useful question is which arrangement fits your ability to contribute, your investment horizon and the protection your family actually needs.
What changes the answer
A savings-oriented bank arrangement generally separates retirement assets from insurance protection. An insurance solution may combine savings, death cover or contribution waiver, according to its contract. Compare guaranteed values, market exposure, insurance costs and exit terms independently. A projected maturity value is not automatically a guaranteed payment.
A realistic example
A hypothetical professional can save CHF 300 monthly today but expects a career change in two years. Two quotations show similar long-term projections. The decisive question may be what happens after twenty-four payments: can contributions stop, what protection continues, and what transfer or surrender value remains?
The hidden trade-off
Bundled protection can be useful when it fills a real household gap. It can also obscure the price of each component. A more flexible savings structure is not necessarily sufficient for a family lacking death or disability protection. Ask for separate alternatives so that flexibility and protection can be priced rather than traded blindly.
Build a genuinely comparable quotation
Set the same monthly savings budget, investment exposure and intended duration for both quotations. Then ask each provider to identify how much of the payment becomes retirement savings and how much funds risk protection or expenses. If one quotation includes a death benefit, obtain a separate protection quotation to make the alternative comparable. Do not equate a premium with an invested amount. At CHF 300 monthly, total payments over five years are CHF 18,000, but neither the accessible value nor the investment balance necessarily equals that sum. The contract and market performance determine the result.
Your practical checks
Request the full fee schedule, risk premiums, investment documents and annual surrender or transfer values. Compare a stop after two, five and ten years. Ask whether contribution changes alter benefits, guarantees or underwriting. Check that every illustrated return is labelled as an assumption rather than a promise.
Test a change of circumstances
Ask the provider to illustrate an income reduction, emigration and a home-purchase project separately. These events can lead to different outcomes: reducing contributions, transferring the arrangement or requesting a permitted early payment are not interchangeable actions. Write down the contractual consequences, remaining guarantees and any insurance that would end. If a new protection contract would require health underwriting, the ability to replace existing cover cannot be presumed. The preferred arrangement should still be understandable in each scenario, and any condition described orally should be confirmed in the signed documents before the comparison is considered complete.
The next step
Choose a structure you can keep through realistic changes in your life. A well-documented comparison may favour a bank arrangement, insurance or a combination. The conclusion should explain the costs and protective benefits in ordinary francs, with no assumption that the tax deduction alone justifies the contract.
