Bank saving or investment insurance: compare the commitment, not the label

Liquidity, insured protection and early-exit costs matter as much as the investment funds.

Two structures can hold similar investments

A bank or investment account and an insurance savings policy may both use market-linked funds. Their legal structure, access rules, guarantees and obligations differ. Start by identifying the objective: flexible capital accumulation, pension saving, death protection or income protection. Combining objectives can be convenient, but it can obscure which part of the premium pays for investment and which part funds protection or distribution costs.

Read the flexibility in writing

Check contribution changes, pauses, partial withdrawals, transfer and closure. A provider’s statement that a product is flexible needs contractual detail. What happens after one, three or ten years? Does a pause reduce cover or create charges? Distinguish unrestricted savings from pillar 3a, whose legal restrictions exist regardless of whether the provider is a bank or insurer. A flexible investment policy is not necessarily freely withdrawable pension money.

Hypothetical interrupted savings

A saver plans CHF 300 monthly but faces a lower income after two years. Compare a bank-based arrangement where contributions can be changed under its conditions with an insurance policy requiring a contractual adjustment. Request the actual surrender value and remaining protection rather than multiplying premiums by twenty-four. This hypothetical example explains why affordability and an early-exit scenario belong in the decision even when the intended horizon is long.

Guarantees need a precise definition

Find out whether a guarantee applies at maturity only, to premiums after risk costs, or to a specific component. Identify the guarantor, conditions and consequences of early withdrawal. Fund performance and tax treatment are separate from the guarantee. Also examine premium-waiver and death benefits: insured events, waiting periods, exclusions and health assessment. Compare the price of separate risk cover where that alternative fits the objective.

All-in cost comparison

Align investment exposure before comparing historical results. Add account, fund, advice, transaction and insurance costs, plus any acquisition or exit effects. A historical insurer projection is not a guaranteed net result unless the contract specifically says so for that amount and date. Ask how remuneration is funded and what documentation you receive. Swiss financial-services transparency principles support asking direct questions rather than relying on the product name.

Choose the structure that survives change

Bring income variability, reserves, existing risk cover and expected projects to the discussion. Test a contribution pause and early departure alongside the intended maturity. Where pension or tax rules apply, use the relevant current official source and a complete personal assessment. Clearwise can compare planning structures and protection needs while clarifying the authorised scope of any investment advice. The useful choice is one you understand and can sustain.

Test the household priority

Ask whether the family primarily needs protection if you die, protection if you cannot earn, or a pool of flexible capital. Those priorities may justify different structures even with the same monthly budget. Price each function visibly before combining them, and record why the combination is useful. If a protection need later disappears, investigate whether the savings contract can change accordingly. This prevents a convenient initial package from becoming a long-term commitment whose benefits no longer match the household’s circumstances.
