Earthquake protection: household contents are not the building
Check the insured property, deductible and living-cost support without treating a rejected funding proposal as existing protection.

Read the policy before relying on the headline
An earthquake question is not answered by finding the words natural hazards on a household policy. The property insured and the cause covered both matter. This dossier was checked on 17 October 2026. A tenant's belongings, an owner's building and temporary accommodation are different exposures, even when one event affects all three. Start by identifying what you own, what another party insures and what costs you would personally face. Do not infer that the landlord's cover protects a tenant's furniture or that private liability pays for damage to your own possessions simply because it is bundled with household insurance.
Keep the policy separate from the political debate
On 30 September 2026 the National Council rejected the proposed federal earthquake-damage funding mechanism, following the Council of States. Parliament's report is the primary reference; the linked SWI article gives contemporary reporting context. That rejected proposal must not be presented as an enacted replacement for checking private protection. Nor does this decision alone describe every existing cantonal arrangement or private contract. For an individual home, ask the relevant building insurer and household insurer what is actually in force. A news article about future policy discussions is not a benefit confirmation for a particular address or loss.
Check the layers that a product actually offers
La Mobilière's published product distinguishes household and building protection and describes different levels of earthquake benefits. Treat this as one provider's example, not a market-wide promise. Ask whether your own wording covers repair or replacement, a limited immediate assistance amount, accommodation and any other claimed expense. Examine the deductible's calculation base, not only its percentage: a percentage of an insured value can produce a different amount from a percentage of the repair bill. Confirm limits, locations and any conditions that would affect payment. A low premium cannot be evaluated sensibly without knowing the retained loss.
A hypothetical tenant and owner in the same building
Imagine a tenant with CHF 35,000 of household contents and an owner facing a separate building repair estimate. If a hypothetical contents policy applies a CHF 2,000 deductible to a covered CHF 12,000 contents loss, the simplified remaining claim is CHF 10,000 before other terms. It says nothing about the owner's wall repairs or the tenant's hotel bill. These amounts and this deductible are invented solely to illustrate the separation, not an insurer quotation. Put each cost beside its potential payer and leave unconfirmed items visible. Avoid adding all losses together and applying one assumed household limit.
Make prevention and claims preparation concrete
Keep a secure inventory of important belongings, the building insurer's contact if relevant, and copies of the actual earthquake clauses. Ask how urgent protective work and accommodation should be authorised after an event. Safety assessment comes before photographs or entering damaged premises; follow competent authorities and professionals. Where gaps remain, compare available cover against the loss your household could absorb rather than buying from a fear-based headline. Clearwise can help map contents, building and additional expenses and collect written answers. Only the applicable institutions and contract can establish the scope of financial protection for your home.
