Switching health insurance for 2027: separate basic and supplementary cover

Compare 2027 basic premiums, then build supplementary cover around your health priorities—not just the monthly price.

Before comparing a monthly premium, write down how you want to access care and which supplementary benefits matter to you. Priminfo is the Federal Office of Public Health’s official premium comparator. Use it to compare suitable basic-insurance models, rather than assuming that the lowest displayed price fits your needs. Information checked on 10 October 2026.

For a basic-insurance switch effective on 1 January 2027, your current insurer must receive your cancellation by 30 November 2026. The OFSP recommends sending it by 15 November using registered mail or A-Plus, while also applying to the new insurer. Keep your delivery evidence.

Basic insurers must accept applicants regardless of age or health, without a health questionnaire. Switching basic insurance does not require cancelling supplementary insurance with the same provider. Treat the two contracts as separate decisions.

For supplementary insurance, wait for written confirmation of the new cover before cancelling the old policy. Check the actual contractual cancellation dates: they differ from basic insurance, and the insurance year may not end on 31 December. If you are considering a change now, ask which contractual cancellation rights remain available.

Compare the supplementary policy’s terms and any separate lists of covered clinics, therapists or treatments. Before planned treatment, clarify the insurer’s payment limits and obtain confirmation of cost coverage. Prepare your current policies, renewal notices and priorities for a review; a lower premium is useful only if the access rules and cover also suit your situation.
